| GOD'S NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES TELL US MUCH ABOUT WHO AND WHAT HE IS. |
| The starting point to
understanding who and what God is, is that "God is love."
This is stated in both 1 John 4:8 and 16. All other of God's
characteristics must be understood in context with and proceed from
that foundational fact of His existence -- that He is Love. In the Old Testament we find these names for God: ADONAI Sovereign, controller, master, owner, Lord YAHVEH Self-existent, Eternal, The Lord, I Am that I Am EL Strength, mighty, Almighty, God ELOHIM Supreme (magistrates), God EL SHADDAI God, The Powerful, All Mighty, Almighty YAHVEH YIREH The Eternal will see, is present, will provide, will provide a sacrifice YAHVEH NICCY The Eternal, my banner, standard (of victory) YAHVEH TSIDQENUW The Eternal, our right YAHVEH SHALOWM The Eternal, our peace YAHVEH SHAMMAH The Eternal is there, thither, is present YAHVEH RA'AH (ROIY) The Eternal, our shepherd YAHVEH RAPHAH The Eternal our healer, mender, who makes whole, curer, physician God of our Fathers God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Mighty one of Israel Lord of Hosts Compassionate Gracious Abounding in love Longsuffering Faithful Plenteous in mercy -- forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin Slow to anger Refuge and strength Names and attributes of Jesus Christ. When we consider who and what God is we can only bow in awe and adoration. He is God and we are not. |
